Tent fabric may be made of many materials including cotton (canvas), nylon, felt and polyester. Cotton absorbs water, so it can become very heavy when wet, but the associated swelling tends to block any minute holes so that wet cotton is more waterproof than dry cotton.
Tents are usually used as shelter during camping, hiking, and other outdoor recreational activities. Large tents are also used to provide temporary shelter for events such as outdoor weddings or circuses.
Waterproof coating refers to the material manufacturers use to coat the tent folds. Silicone and polyurethane are the most common coatings which offer a thin waterproof film layer to the tent. The coatings enhance the HH rating but can add weight and are expensive.
Tents are heat traps when they're in the sun. That is one reason why it's always prudent to pitch a tent in as much shade as possible no amount of mesh will keep a sun-baked tent that comfortable. Plus, sun is murder on tent fabrics, so if you can keep it in the shade, it will last much longer.
Moisture in a tent comes from three places: The existing moisture level in the air itself (humidity) Moisture added to your inner airspace by each breath you take at night. Moisture added by any wet items you might have inside your tent.
