faq's
A pond liner is an impermeable geomembrane used for retention of liquids, including the lining of reservoirs, retention basins, hazardous and non-hazardous surface impoundments, garden ponds and artificial streams in parks and gardens.
The most common types are PVC and rubber Pond Liners such as Epalyn (EPDM) and Butyl. We recommend PVC made Poly Liners which are durable, flexible, cost effective and easy to work.
Pond Liners with a thickness of 0.75mm are recommended for most of the garden pond builds while 0.85mm offers a little more durability.
Common in warmer climates, Algae can give the side of Pond Liners (or that of a prefabricated or concrete pond) a green, slimy, hair-like coat and even tint the water-dense green. In a natural setting, the fish produce nutrients that are absorbed by plants, leaving very little for algae.
PVC Pond Liners are very stable, nontoxic, and provide the same life expectancy as HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) Liners.
PVC is one type of plastic Pond Lining which is perfect for small and medium ponds. This is the most common KOI Pond Liner used and can normally be found with 0.5mm - 1 mm thickness.
While tarps are water-resistant, they are not waterproof. A tarp used as a pond liner will begin to leak before a single season passes. You can cut the bottom section to size and use it to line your garden pond for a few years of quiet enjoyment.
You can use plastic sheeting such as landscape plastic to line a pond, but the material will not last as long as other types of liners. It breaks down and is more susceptible to punctures, and some types of landscape plastic will kill aquatic plants and fish.
