Tensile strength (TS) at break measures the maximum stress a plastic specimen can withstand while being stretched before breaking. Some materials can break sharply (brittle failure). While others will deform or elongate before breaking. It is measured as the tensile or compressive load required to fracture something.

There are three different main classifications in the field of tensile construction systems: membrane tensioned structures, mesh tensioned, and pneumatic structures.

High-tensile steels are part of a low-carbon group which have additional alloying ingredients - chromium, molybdenum, silicon, manganese, nickel and vanadium - which are designed to increase not just its durability, but its malleability and ductility too.

Tungsten has the highest tensile strength of any pure metal – up to 500,000 psi at room temperature. It has the highest tensile strength even at temperatures over 1,500°C.
